  • School Anthem

Guru Nanak Vidyak Society is as old as our freedom. It started working in the field of education in the year 1947. Imbued with such a mission over many years back a band of energetic workers met together on June 22, 1947 in Bombay and a decision was taken to start a school at Koliwada. This decision was in fact long overdue, for the need of a school for Punjabi speaking pupils in the premier city was being persistently felt. Hundreds of Punjabi families add permanently settled in Bombay and made it their home even before the great political upheaval of 1947. The inflow of displaced persons from Punjab , North West Frontier Province and Sind in thousands in 1947 and afterwards made that need more obvious and urgent. The task was formidable and available resources in men and material were quite meagre. The urge however, could not be resisted and thus Guru Nanak Vidyak Society came into existence in July 1947 with S. Pratap Singh as President. Some more public spirited and philanthropic friends rallied round and the Society was under the Societies’ Registration Act XXI of 1860 under No. 1621 of 1947-48.

The Bombay Municipality, allotted to the Society two plots of land very near the Kolwada Railway Station with two old military barracks, where the venture started on 01.07.1947 with 29 students on roll in Guru Nanak primary School and 60 students in Guru Nanak High School. The land made available, being low lying and marshy and the barracks in almost dilapidated condition the society had to incur a good deal of expenditure in the initial stages to make the said site and the barracks usable for school purposes. At a little later stage another piece of land admeasuring about 16,000 sq. yds. Was acquired from the Municipal Corporation of Bombay to be used as a School playground. Primary schools were opened at Morbaug Road, Dadar and Station Road, Bhandup at the request of Sri. Guru Singh Sabhas of Bombay and Bhandup in January 1950 and January 1951 respectively. Again at the request of Khalsa Sabha, Bombay the Primary School run by the sabha at Mahim was taken over by the Society with the effect from March 1, 1952 with 96 children. Another school was established on 3rd Road at Khar on 01-07-1957. Montessori classes were then gradually added to the above institutions. The society started a high school for girls in the Gurudwara premises at Dadar from June 1958 which was later converted into a co-ed school. All these schools are recognized and aided by the Government and Municipal Educational Authorities and are run on modern lines for the benefit of boys and girls of all castes and creeds.

    Milestones

The First Celebration is as old as our freedom. Some more public spirited and philanthropic friends rallied round and the Society was under the Societies’ Registration Act XXI of 1860 under No. 1621 of 1947-48.

in the history of these institutions was reported thus in the Local Press on 16-03-1949. “Histrionic talent of a high order was displayed by the Guru Nanak High School, Kolwada, on the occasion of the first annual gathering and prize distribution of the School. The well thought out and cleverly performed items of entertainment included a highly amusing satire a court scene in which a congressman, a 1942 underground political worker an I.N.A officer and a refugee sought to establish their respective superior claim to honour and recognition on the basis of their contribution to the freedom movement of the country. Even the matter of fact Home Minister of our Province, Mr. Morarji Desai , was tickled by this stage wrangling of freedom warriors, which effectively illustrated a phase through which our country is passing. To come back to the school, I gathered that when it was started a year ago it had only 89 pupils mostly refugees. To day, its strength is nearly 5000. While a high standard of discipline is maintained the students are given the utmost freedom for self-conducted activities, the most interesting being the “Ashoka History club” devoted to the collection of Coins, stamps, pictures and other relics with a bearing on history. Mr. Morarji Desai paid a well-deserved tribute to the work of students”. As on today we have 9 Secondary Schools and 4 Junior College and 2 Senior Colleges. The results of all the schools is always very good.(Annexure 5 & 6) In the year 1975, the education department started new system of 10+2+3. Under this system the Management started Junior College sections at

All the Junior Colleges are working in a best manner, catering to the needs of poor people of the Society. To go ahead in the path of education, Guru Nanak Vidyak Society felt the need of starting Senior College. In the year 1989 Guru Nanak College of Arts, Science and Commerce was started in a newly constructed six story building in Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar. Now, at present we have more than 1300 students and 37 staff members working in the College.

Responding to the demand of the Society, Guru Nanak Vidyak Society thought starting a teachers’ training College. Guru Nanak College of Education and Research was started in the year 1990, in a very spacious educational campus at Shiviji talao , Bhandup. This is the only management , which has started the following unique programmes in Mumbai. Management tries to help poor and needy students by giving notebooks, books, shoes, and uniforms. For this purpose the Managment takes assistance of some well-wishers and the donors. The Management arranges special coaching to the weak and poor students. During the vacations, the Management on its own expenses calls the teachers to teach the needy students. During the 55 years of working there is not any single complaint or case against our school in the Education Department or Municipal Corporation.

    Activities of the school:

    • All the eleven branches have full-fledged, well equipped Science Laboratories.
    • All the branches have Computer Labs. Most of the staff members are computer literate.
    • Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar branch and Bhandup we have very specious play ground which are used for organizing interschool sports. Many times the same grounds are used by the Education Department to organize different rallies.
    • Guru Nanak Vidyak Society gave full co-operation for the Education Department to hosting Regional level Science Exhibition in the year 1998.
    • All the branches of Guru Nanak School give full co-operation to Government of Maharashtra for different projects like Savitribhai Dattak Palak Yojana.
    • All the national festivals are celebrated with lots of enthusiasm and zeal.
    • Many programmes organized by the Education Department for the Social cause like Aid Awareness Programme, National Association for Blind and Leprosy Eradication. Funds are also collected on behalf of the organization.

This is the history of 55 years service and progress of strife and struggle and hope and faith. A lot has been done for the education of the poor people, but much more still remains undone and that we hope to achieve through the willingness and active help of the society and the members of the trust.

"May God continue to bless these institutions as he has done in the past"
